Parents of Class of 2021 – What to Expect in the Senior Year

The typical senior year is packed full of activity and celebrations. This year is a lot different and much is still up in the air. Nonetheless, we hope this information might be useful even if everything is tentative. The PTSA will be sending emails throughout the year with updates and reminders. We will also attempt to update our senior page on our website (here) on a regular basis. And, finally the school has a senior and yearbook section on their website too with more information LWHS Senior Info Page. Check back frequently for most up to date info! And, please see the end of this message for an important call to action.

College Application Workshops (Sept. – Jan.) –  Sponsored by the PTSA, experienced volunteers are available to help your student with ideas and editing of their college application essay. Traditionally this has happened in person after school, but we are looking for ways to bring this valuable service to students in a virtual format. Also, see the Counseling Page on the school website for lots of helpful information on applying to college - LWHS Counseling Center.

Cap & Gown Orders (October - ish) – Jostens is the LWHS vendor for these and many other graduation related items. Usually orders are taken in person at school but will likely be virtual this year and timing may be delayed. Look for communication directly from the school regarding ordering information. Deadline for on-time delivery is March 31, 2021. Some families choose to look for hand me down caps/gowns from previous students. Jostens also provides caps/gowns for families in need. The school is hoping to offer a drive by celebration for seniors to pick up their Cap & Gown in late April or early May if students are not back in school by then.

Yearbook Deadlines (September - December) – Parents have the option to purchase a Senior Recognition Add usually featuring a baby photo of their student for inclusion in the yearbook.  Your student’s school photo will be included in the yearbook UNLESS you want to upload a professional quality digital photo this year due DECEMBER 1st. Students can also submit quotes & silly photos. See the school website for most up to date deadlines and specific requirements for Senior Photos & Adds and information on yearbook ordering windows. - Yearbook Info.

**this year due to COVID  and in order to capture as many activities as possible, including sports, in-person school, and senior events including graduation, distribution will happen via drive-through at the school in mid-July.

ASB Senior Events – These events are planned by the ASB leadership and generally do not involve parents. Encourage your student to join the LW Class of 2021 Instagram account (lwhs.2021) for best chance of hearing about these events. Some or all may not be allowed due to Public Health Guidelines and all are of course optional.

  • Senior Sunrise – typically the morning of the first Friday of school. Like it sounds, seniors meet at the school to watch the sun rise.
  • Senior Prom – date TBD. Usually end of May or early June.
  • Senior Sunset – usually the last Friday of the school year. Like the sunrise but the opposite!
  • Moving Up Assembly - early June. Planned by the ASB to commemorate the seniors exit from their usual spot and juniors take their place.

The district, in coordination with each high school, plans the official graduation ceremony.

Graduation – Currently scheduled for Wednesday, June 9th, 3pm at T-Mobile Park. If live, there is generally a rehearsal held the day before along with a senior breakfast. If a virtual graduation is required, communication will come from the school.

PTSA Sponsored Events **– Grad Night Party, Senior Salute. The Senior Salute is generally held at the school the Thursday evening before graduation and is a more informal way to celebrate our graduates with family and friends. Lots of photo opportunities in Cap & Gown which can be difficult at the real graduation. The Grad Night Party is an all-night chaperoned event for seniors only to celebrate in a safe and fun way with their classmates on graduation night.

** both events unfortunately had to be cancelled last year due to COVID- 19 and we are uncertain what this year will bring. Planning is underway to hold these events as usual should that be allowed and we are also considering alternative ideas.

If you would like to participate in senior celebrations brainstorming and planning so we are prepared to celebrate the Class of 2021, please email info@lwhsptsa.org.  Parents of younger LWHS students are encouraged to join the conversation too as it is a great way to get advance knowledge of the senior experience and “pay it forward” by helping at the events.
